Critical issues in education that will be most critical for me as a teacher
In this vlog, I will be discussing some of the critical issues in educationI learned about this semester that I think will be most critical for me as a teacher. I will be teaching elementary school and some critical issues that stuck out to me the most were bullying and cyberbullying, social media, and school violence. I feel these are the most critical because these are things that should be prevented at a young age so as a teacher it is important to keep an eye out.

ReplyDeleteAshley, it is very alarming to see kids at such a young age having cell phones, as well as being active on social media. They are unaware of the negative effects they will seek when on these apps, which could lead them to be ridiculed and bullied. As an educator, it is our job to assure our students that social media can be toxic and dangerous and should be used responsibly. We also should emphasize that social media may cause low self-esteem and depression. There is a luring factor with technology that one is sucked into it, and when sucked in, it is hard coming out of it. Having connections with other classmates is essential when in school, and cell phones have put a detriment to that factor. There is a lack of communication between classmates because they gravitate to going on their phones during filler time. After the pandemic, social skills have decreased since we were indoors and doing everything on technology. We are trying to revert to pre-pandemic times so that we can enable more social connections and bonds with classmates. I admire how you tied the three critical issues of your choice together by saying social media can lead to bullying, which can also lead to violence. Overall, I enjoyed watching your perspective on critical issues, and I hope you have a good rest of your semester.
ReplyDeleteI also think that children are getting cell phones too early in their lives. The amount of videos I see on the internet of children who are barely even 5 years old with their eyes glued to an Ipad is disturbing to me. I feel this is not healthy for a developing mind. This child I know who is barely 7 years old is constantly on youtube watching videos, I feel like when I was 7 I was playing with action figures. Which I would consider a much safer and healthier way to spend your time as a child. Social media for a young child should 100% be limited by the parent. I believe that you should be 13-15 years old before you should be on social media. Children should not have easy access to all the information that is on the internet. There is certain information and images that can alter a child's mind for the worse. Cyberbullying like you said is also something that comes with social media use. This is something that us as future educators need to try and prevent by speaking to our students about the harm it can cause. All in all great video made some good points on school violence that I agree with.
